60s Birthday Party Theme
Ages: Grown Ups/Adults
Invitations:
Make a card in the shape of a lava lamp and add a little glitter
to it. Color the inside with bubble shapes in a single color and
put the party information in different bubbles. Encourage guests
to come in their bell bottoms, tie dye and other hippy gear.
Decorations
Hang peace symbols from the ceiling and use lots of psychedelic
colors for balloons and streamers. Borrow lava lamps from friends
and put them throughout the party area. Hang beads from doorways
that party guests will walk through. Put posters from Woodstock
and famous bands from the 60’s up on the walls. Play music from
famous 60’s groups like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Jimi
Hendrix, the Doors, Neil Diamond, Dave Clark Five, The Who, and
Led Zeppelin.
Games and Activities:
Twister made its debut in the 60’s and would be a fun game for
guests to play. Compile a DVD with different TV shows and movies
from the 60’s and have guests watch the clips and try to guess the
names. Have a small area of the party be the “tattoo parlor” where
guests can have temporary tattoos of peace signs, smiley faces and
flower power put on. Hire someone to teach guests how to dance
popular dances of the 60’s like the Twist, the Monster Mash, The
Madison, the Watusi, The Pony and Hitch Hike.
Food Ideas:
Make a simple round cake and decorate it to look like a peace
symbol. Punch bowls became very popular in the 60’s. Soda in
aluminum cans was a new thing and popular. Custard ice cream was
suggested by Better Homes and Gardens to be the best thing to
serve at birthday parties. Fondue was extremely popular and is
perfect for parties. You could do multiple fondue pots with
different types of cheese or chocolate. Put out items for dipping
such as crackers, sausage, cookies, strawberries, apples, bread,
and anything else you can think of.
